Twilight Saga

It's been quite some time since I last posted an update to the blog. I've been quite busy with work, baking, my kids and many more that I could not find time to even check out my blog. Anyway, I'm hoping all this will change as I'm having a much better breathing space now.... Hopefully :)

Anyway, for the past few weeks I've been baking some cakes and cupcakes and will upload pictures as soon as I could find where my card reader has dissapeared to :). I've also taken up some reading lately and the latest book that I'm reading is the Twilight Saga which consists of 4 books (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn) and this partly contributes to me not updating my blog. :)
I picked up the books after hearing much rave review from my collegues and I decided to read and see what the hype was all about. After reading the first few pages, I was hooked. I could'nt put the book down as the story was really captivating and very very addictive. The storyline was really good. It makes you tingle and feel warm and fuzzy all inside when reading the book. It's very hypnotising and it makes you yearn for such love to exist in this sometime cruel and harsh world.
For those who loves a good love stroy, I truly recommend reading Twilight. It's actually an International bestseller and the movie just came out last December. Its about a vampire (Edward) falling in love with a human girl (Bella) and there was a conversation between both of them referring to their situation in the book that was so cute that goes as follows:

"And so the lion fell in love with the lamb ...." he murmured
"What a stupid lamb," I sighed.
"What a sick masochistics lion"...he replied.
Do get hold of Twilight the book and read them. If you can get hold of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th series, get them too coz believe me, you can't get enough of their love story and you would want to read the books until the end to know the conclusion. You won't regret them. :) This is the best love story so far.

For those interested in watching the trailer, go to http://www.twilightthemovie.com/

Happy Reading.

P/S: New Moon movie will come out this November 2009. Can't wait to see it :)

Wilton Method cake decorating

Since I've always been learning cake decorating by my own through books and the internet, I've always wondered the techniques and correct ways of cake decorating done by professional cake decorators. This year, I decided to stop wondering and enrolled myself in the Wilton cake decorating class. I started Wilton's Course 1 early of the month. When I joined, I was quite surprise to find out that most of the students have cake decorating experience and some even have their own family bakery. They enrolled with the same reason as I did which was to equip ourselves with the correct techniques in cake decorating.

I'm glad I enrolled since the classes taught students many techniques to decorate a cake. When applying these tehniques, cake decorating becomes much easier and better.

In the first class, we learned all about tips, folding parchement paper the wilton way and how to do crusting buttercream. I was happy to finally know how to do a crusting buttercream as all this while, I only use non-crusting buttercream. What's the difference you may ask - well its stiffer than normal buttercream thus do not require to be refrigerated and holds decoration much better for a longer period. Also, you are able to make the buttercream smooth like a fondant unlike the normal soft buttercream. My only reservation was that its uses shortening instead of butter and loads and loads of sugar :( . I prefer my buttercream to be all butter with just the right sweetness :).

In the subsequent classes, we learned how to do transfer design, how to pipe novelty figurine such as clown and the wilton roses.

For those interested, Wilton cake decorating method is an internationally renowned courses in cake decorating. ICCA Malaysia is authorised to conduct classes for the Wilton cake decorating method and those interested may enroll themselves either at ICCA branches at Kota Damansara, Hartamas or Petaling Jaya. There's 4 courses: Course 1, Course 2, Course 3 and Course 4 (optional) and at the end of each course, certificates would be given to successful participants. For those who completed all 3 courses may even have the opportunity to become a Wilton Instructor that's licensed to conduct Wilton cake decorating classes. I recommend those interested in cake decorating to attend Wilton cake decorating courses since in my humble opinion, the knowledge gained is priceless. I'll be attending the 2nd course in February and will update the blog with this later.

The picture shows the cake that we did at our final class. The decoration uses crusting buttercream. Not too happy with the roses though :( .... neeed to practice more on this :)

Barbie cupcake

2008 has passed and here comes 2009, the year of the Ox under the Chinese calender. For 2009, the first cake that I baked was cupcakes for my friend's daughter. She wanted a barbie cupcake and here's the pictures. She later told me that her daughter refused to eat the cupcake and wanted to keep them instead. :)
